Freezer Babies

Reproductive technology over the years has had many advancements and its use has widely expanded. In today’s world, individuals who are unable to naturally conceive a child are now confronted with a multitude of possibilities to begin or expand their family. These possibilities provide hope for a future full of creating memories with children. However, all this joy may bring complication.

For NASA scientist, Kelly Burke, adopting frozen embryos was her saving grace after years of trying to conceive naturally. Four embryos were donated to her after a couple created the embryos for their own in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure. After this couple’s IVF procedure was successful, they froze their extra embryos for possible future use. Nineteen years later, this couple was put into contact with Kelly to discuss embryo donation. Following a rigorous adoption process, the embryos were donated and two were implanted into Kelly. Nine months later, Kelly delivered a healthy baby boy, Liam.

The reproductive technology surrounding IVF and frozen embryos is remarkable. Nevertheless, this technology may bring legal headaches. Kelly was required to go through a rigorous adoption process in order to receive the four embryos from the couple. Adoptions can be a complex process while going through a delicate and emotional time. It is important to have a trained and educated medical and legal team on your side to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
